How to Study for the Bar Exam

Before you can start studying for the bar exam, you must eliminate distractions. Here are some tips for creating a productive bar exam study environment.

Wondering how to study for the bar exam? A big part of studying for the bar exam centers around where you prepare for the bar exam. To maximize the results of your bar exam study sessions, you'll want to heed this good advice.

  • Focus is key. You have to eliminate all distractions in order to do well on the bar exam. Now is not the time to be multi-tasking. Create (or find) a dedicated space for studying for the bar exam. When you are in that space, you do only one thing: prepare for the bar exam.

  • Clear out your study space. Your bar exam study room should have good lighting; be clean; be free of distractions (no televisions); and you should be sure you have a comfortable and ergonomic chair.

  • Assemble your bar exam materials. Keep your bar exam study materials readily at hand and keep them well-organized. Wasting time finding materials means you've lost time that could have been spent preparing to do better on the bar exam.

  • Hold all calls. Put a message on your telephone-answering device that says you will return calls after February 28 or July 30. Add an autoresponder to your email account that says you will answer emails after that date. Arrange for at least eight weeks off from work. Get ready to pass the bar exam!

  • Limit family interruptions. Explain to your family that you need this time to study for the bar exam without interruptions. Remind your family that your becoming a lawyer will make them happy, too. You cannot study according to schedule if you are responding to the demands of your children, your parents, or your spouse. One successful student told her husband to go home to his mother for two months, because she was going to pass the bar exam.
