Dr. Gallagher Releases White Paper Urging Re-Scheduling of Bar Exam

"Downward Bar Exam Results Spiral Dooms Aspiring Lawyers to Bar Exam Failure," BarWrite® Expert Says

Dr. Mary Campbell Gallagher's New BarWrite® White Paper "Eliminating the Downward Bar Exam Results Spiral" Available

November 2008

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--When most law school graduates check their bar exam results on the internet, they see, "Congratulations! You passed!" Indeed, graduates of New York State's 15 law schools passed the July 2008 New York bar exam at better than a 90% rate. But the next New York bar exam is not until February 2009, and between now and February those with a bar exam failure in July, the "retakers," may slip into what Dr. Mary Campbell Gallagher calls a spiral of failing NY bar exam results. In her new white paper "Eliminating the Downward Bar Exam Spiral," Dr. Gallagher argues that because of the timing of the exam, too many retakers, regardless of why they failed, may "keep making futile efforts but never see good bar exam results or get to practice law."

Between November and February, most retakers must find or keep a job, earn money, take time off for intensive study, and pay for bar-preparation courses. They cannot get new student loans, but they must repay the loans they already have.

Dr. Gallagher, president of BarWrite® and BarWrite Press, which prepares candidates for the NY bar exam, and a longtime bar-exam educator, says this downward spiral of bar exam failure may especially affect minority candidates. But solutions are straightforward.

Dr. Gallagher Speaks at Global Legal Studies Conference, Chicago, May 5, 2007!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FOREIGN LAWYERS CAN OFTEN WRITE BETTER BAR EXAM ESSAYS THAN AMERICANS... Bar Exam Expert Says, at the Global Legal Skills Conference, Chicago, May 4-5

NEW YORK, NY.  May 2007.   If you think foreign lawyers must be at a disadvantage when they take the New York bar exam, think again.  On May 5, 2007, at the Global Legal Studies Conference at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, noted bar exam expert Mary Campbell Gallagher, J.D., Ph.D., will explain why some foreign attorneys are able to write better New York bar exam essays than Americans.

"Many foreign attorneys are excellent at memorization and highly-disciplined," Dr. Gallagher says.  "They may have less breadth of knowledge of American law than graduates of American law schools.  But they have a tremendous advantage over those American bar candidates who do not know the basic rules of law backwards or who cannot study efficiently."

A nationally-recognized speaker and lecturer on the bar exam, Dr. Gallagher is the author of Scoring High on Bar Exam Essays: In-depth Strategies and Essay-Writing Practice That Bar Review Courses Don’t Offer, out from BarWrite Press in its third edition. The book teaches Dr. Gallagher's Under-Here-ThereforeTM systems for legal writing, based in Aristotelian logic, which she introduced in the first edition (ARCO 1991).
